Don’t sweater it: Harpoon Siddiqui assays the well-nigh impossible. He tries to make a dud seem appealing. From the Sunday Star:

…Dion has many shortcomings.

He is no orator. But nor is Stephen Harper, though the Prime Minister does read his speeches more authoritatively than he used to.

Dion's English is heavily accented. So is the French of many English Canadian politicians.

He lacks charisma. So does Harper. Sarah Palin has lots of charisma.

Dion is stubborn. So are many political leaders.

He is not good at delegating. Nor is Harper. Depending on one's point of view, the latter is either "a control freak" or "a strong leader."

Dion writes his own speeches. So did Bill Clinton.

The real rap against Dion is that he does not inspire people. Harper inspires fear. Take your pick…

Dion is a sincere and honest politician, untainted by scandal. He is a polite and decent man. He is not mean or vindictive. He does not treat his political opponents as enemies. He does not question the patriotism of the critics of his Afghan policy, let alone call them agents of the Taliban. He is not proposing to send 14-year-olds to jail for life.

Vote against him because you do not like his policies, not because he is socially awkward or that he reads books.

Vote for Harper because you like his policies, not because he got himself photographed in a sweater in front of a fireplace.

Will do, Harpoon. For my money, the sweater shot actually did him more harm than good. No man ever looks masterful in a cardigan.

Another Harpoon acolyte with the unlikely moniker of Abe Goldberg shows that he definitely is no Abe Goldberg with his lack of knowledge about Judaism and his judenhaas hubris. He often writes anti-Israel diatribes in the Star and Globe but unfortunately he let his mask slip in today's letter to the editor in the Star. It's time the Star verified his true identity.

Oct. 2

Jewish professor David Noble at York University, who wants to hold classes on the two days of Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year) and Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement), is fighting the good fight. Jewish students complain that they can't attend because of the holidays.

One can celebrate Rosh Hashanah at night – as one does in the secular New Year – and still go to classes during the day. Besides, the Hanukkah holiday in December is equally important as Rosh Hashanah, yet no Jewish student clamours to have those days off.

I was taught in Jewish school that if one cannot observe Yom Kippur on the appropriate calendar day, one can substitute another day, such as Sunday, when there would be no classes for York students.

It is ironic that Jews, who are in the forefront of movements fighting for equality for all citizens, should strive for special privileges at an institution devoted to educating their students in civic responsibility.

Gaza U "devoted to educating students in civic responsibility." Is he kidding? "Civic responsiblity" on that campus is a combo of da'wa and Judenhass--sort of like a mini-UN Human Rights Council.http://network.nationalpost.com/np/blogs/fullcomment/archive/2008/09/29/jonathan-kay-on-the-hypocrisy-of-york-university-s-quot-students-against-israeli-apartheid-saia-quot.aspx

I wonder what "Jewish School" Abe Goldberg attended. It must have been the same one as Naomi Klein, Avi Lewis, Noam Chomsky, David Ahakanew, MooMoo Ahmadenijad, Ernst Zundel and James Keegstra.
